For the project in Jojutla, the architects MMX experimented with the effect of the architectural element of the arch. In exchange with the municipality, the city square was selected by the state institution Infonavit for one of the reconstruction projects after the severe earthquake of 2017. Surrounded by numerous collapsed buildings, the architects held workshops with the inhabitants of Jojutla to find a representative replacement for the popular “kiosco”, the destroyed pavilion.

After only a few months the new assembly place was completed. Simple terracotta bricks were used to create round arches, reminiscent of church constructions. On two sides of the square now stand open pavilions that frame the square. The effect of the brick constructions is enormously versatile, depending on the angle from which they are viewed. In collaboration with the landscape architecture studio PAAR, the site has been further enriched with a round pit in the middle of the large pavilion structure, which serves as a seating area as well as with a variety of plants that form a beautiful contrast to the terracotta colour.

The former employees of Alberto Kalach managed to give the place back its identity by playing with two simple elements, the arch and the brick.
